Model DCP-7065DN only has START and STOP buttons…no GO button. What do I do to extend time on original toner when it says it is low?

I know lots of us Slickdealers have purchased this printer – I am one of them, along with a few of my clients who I steered to this device when it was on sale at Staples. One of the reasons we all bought it was to be able to use cheap third party toner, which, of course, Brother doesn’t want us to do. One of the ways they stop us from doing that is to make the system very touchy about accepting third party cartridges, and not publishing the steps to manually force the printer to accept them. As a matter of fact, those steps seem to be such a state secret that I couldn’t get them from a tech support chat on the weekend when one of my clients had a printer reject the genuine Brother cartridge she had bought at Staples. I had to call back during regular business hours and convince them, by giving them a serial number from the replacement toner, that my client had actually purchased a genuine Brother toner cartridge that the system was rejecting. It took over 45 minutes on hold and with a technician to finally be given the steps to reset.

The technician asked me if I wanted him to email me the steps so I would have them if this happened again, and I said, sure, thanks. To my unending bemusement, what I got instead was a generic email listing all the troubleshooting steps one should take prior to resetting the toner, ending with a phone number to call Tech Support if none of them worked. Fortunately for you, me, my client, and anybody who now searches for this information on the internet, I wrote down the steps as he was giving them to me. So, if you ever find yourself in this position, try this:

Open the front cover of the printer
Press and release the “clear” key
Press “start”, then press the up arrow until you see the number 12 on the display
Press “ok”, you will see “accepted” on the display
Close the front cover, your toner cartridge should now work.

When does it expires?

If I understand you correctly, you’re asking how long does it take for the toner to dry up. It doesn’t. It’s not traditional printer ink that can dry up. Expiration? That depends on how often and how much you print. This toner should deliver at least 3000 pages, and if you use the draft print setting, double that. This’ll last me a long time.

I desperately need a packing slip. There was not one enclosed, and my school district that I work for is demanding one. How do I get ahold of one?

I have also taken the box and copied the mailing label and used as a packing slip. My school district has no problem with it. I also print the invoice once the item is delivered.

For some reason this new cartridge is smaller than the previous included cartridge and doesn’t seem to fit in my HL-2270-DW printer. Any suggestions?

The only thing I can say is did you order the right cartridge #. The TN 450 works great in my model HL-2240. May I suggest you review to see that the right cartridge # – match that to the old one. Sorry I can’t be of any other assistance.

My brother printer says TN 420/TN 450. So what is the difference, besides price here on Amazon? Does it matter which I get?

The difference is the amount of toner in the cartridge. TN450 has twice as much as the TN 420.

Could i use tn450 on my hl=2170w printer?

Check with google or your printers specs

Any Toner Tricks for an HL-22400?

I am still on my original toner cartridge and it has been so long I don’t remember-it is the largest size available but I bet I’ve printed in the thousands of documents and it is still going strong. One other thing I do is adjust my dpi settings as needed and use toner saver once in a while. It’s a little bit of a pain but at $60-70 per toner it is well, well worth it. Good Luck!-Tommy

How many copies can i get from a starter brother cartridge?

As I remember, I got far less than 100 copies out of the starter cartridge. I would have the high yield one ready in the wings. You get a many, many copies out of the high yield cartridge which is an amazing value.

does this toner work with image class mf6500 machines

Sorry, I have no idea. I believe you should make sure what every toner you buy it says for mf6500………………………………..

Info About Brother Genuine High Yield Toner Cartridge, TN450, Replacement Black Toner, Page Yield Up to 2,600 Pages (Reviews From Amazon)

Excellent Value for Toner

My history with the HL-2270DW and the TN-450 cartridges:

Starter Cartridge – 751 pages, changed 12/27/2011
2nd Cartridge – 1,999 pages (total printer count 2,750) Changed 03/29/2012
3rd Cartridge – 2,559 pages (total printer count 5,309) Changed 07/24/2012
4th Cartridge – 2,627 pages (total printer count 7,936) Changed 11/19/2012
5th Cartridge – did not record
6th Cartridge – Approx. 2,300 pages (total printer count 12,585) Changed 08/14/2013 (DRUM IS NOW GIVING WARNING OF 0% LIFE LEFT)
DRUM UNIT REPLACED AT 14,908 PAGES 12/21/2013
7th Cartridge – 2,537 Pages (total printer count 15,122) Changed 01/03/2014

I run them until I notice a problem with the output itself, the low toner message comes on long before they actually run out. You can press the GO button 7 times in quick succession to do this.

As of now I’ve stopped counting page output, I think the results are reliable enough to form an opinion. My printer is still rocking on just like it did on day one!

Flawless and Long Lasting

After having issues with either printers or cartridges I’ve found this combo works well. I’ve also monitored the pages printed. I get slightly less than the stated total, but I likely have more than 5% coverage on a notable percentage of pages.

I was just about to change the current cartridge and thought, even with the heavier print, it was a bit too early at just under 1500 pages for a TN450. The prints were low on ink in some places, and almost blank in others. I removed the cartridge and tilted it to the L and R a few times to sort of redistribute the toner inside. Sure enough, the next print was perfect: still like new after 1500 pages. Very impressive and 5 star rating warranted.

(nb. using a 2280 with 10,000+ printed to date, all perfect)
Further update: 5th replacement also yielded almost 2200 pages, this time 2,198

Genuine Brother Cartridge

Other people reported that they received third-party, recycled cartridges. I’m not doubting them, but I thought I should report that I did indeed receive a brand new, genuine Brother cartridge. Here’s how to tell if yours is genuine: 1) confirm the box looks like the one shown in photo 2) check that the packing tape is not tampered with 3) on the outside of the box, look for a security hologram sticker with a QR code on it (about the size of a postage stamp) 4) use a QR code reader app on your smart phone which will display a Brother web page that confirms the cartridge is genuine — the web page also gives tips on how to confirm that the security hologram is genuine.

The cartridge works great so far (will report back if there are any problems). Great price with free one-day Prime shipping.

TIPS: 1) Be sure to follow the directions for changing the cartridge — for me, it was significantly different from my old printer — the toner cartridge is actually housed within a bigger cartridge (called a "drum") that you remove from the printer. 2) Be sure to follow the step where you slide the little green button back and forth several times to clean the drum — ALSO when you are finished sliding the green button, return it all the way back to the "home" position until it CLICKS into place. Sorry if I made this seem more complicated than it is — it’s really easy — just follow the directions. P.S. I love, love, love this multi-function printer — I use it for printing, faxing, and copying and it does all those things flawlessly and quickly (I have the MFC-7860DW model).

OEM is more expensive, but guaranteed no problems

When it comes to toner/ink, it’s very tempting to buy some off-brand “OEM-compatible” product. They are usually half the cost, and this stuff isn’t cheap. But in the long run, you’re doing yourself a favor by going with the OEM product. It’s guaranteed to work perfectly, and you don’t have to worry about it leaking or exploding in your expensive printer or all-in-one machine. I buy nothing but Brother Genuine toner for my AIO machine and have had zero problems.

Worth the money

I have been using genuine Brother toner cartridges for 4 or 5 years, even though you can buy compatible cartridges quite a bit cheaper. I tried the cheaper ones, and they worked, but they were really messy. All of them leaked toner right out of the box and got worse as time went on. The Brother print quality is very good. I am not sure about the longevity. I don’t do a lot of printing, so I only have to get a new one every couple of years. i don’t know if my printer has a feature that counts copies make so I don’t know how close it comes to the estimated quantity you are supposed to get. I will have to explore that.

High yield toner is worth the extra $ but not sure if Genuine Brother toner is worth the extra $

We have tried a couple different generic toner cartridges (Linkyo, V4INK) and I can’t tell if they last longer, or even if they perform better, but Brother customer service/technical support won’t help you if you don’t use real Brother products. I buy the high yield (2600 pages) because it does last longer than the regular. But, why is any ink cartridge this much money? The generics are almost half the price. Plus, I still have to return the used cartridges to the office supply store for recycling. It would be cool if Amazon would recycle these. The Amazon delivery person is already dropping off at my house, so it would be awesome if they could pick-up a return while they are at at.

Genuine Brother cartridge

The cartridge I got was indeed a genuine Brother cartridge. Some previous reviewers had complained about getting non-Brother cartridges, but this problem seems to have been fixed.

It comes mailed right in its own box, thanks to Amazon’s hassle free packaging. You then use that box (and its cardboard inserts) with the included pre-paid mailing label to mail them your old ink cartridge for recycling (completely free for you). I really appreciate the efforts they’ve taken to make this product and its packaging more environmentally friendly than others.

The cartridge itself came with very clear instructions on how to do the replacement, so you don’t have to sit there and guess how to get the old one out and the new one in. I was able to change this cartridge with no confusion and no problems. The machine accepted it perfectly and immediately started printing from it.

I have not used this cartridge long enough to judge on yield yet, so I will leave that part out of the review for now.

*Note: always prep your new cartridge according to the instructions provided. For these, you shake them horizontally and "clean" them using the green slider at the back, making sure the slider is returned to its original position before installation.

Good Quality Toner

The real deal. I went back and forth on whether to get real Brother toner or a generic version. I finally bought the Brother toner, after reading a few reviews about problems with the generic or OEM brands. The toner was a snap to open and pop into the printer. The quality was excellent from the first page I printed. I’ve had no problems at all. Glad I spent a few extra dollars for the real deal. I’m sure the generic versions are okay, but I didn’t want the hassle of having to ship back, or to be stuck without printing ability or poor quality.

Also, as other reviewers have noted, I didn’t replace the toner for my new Brother printer when the toner message came on (from the starter cartridge). I continued to use it for months afterwards (I don’t print that much, though). But every time I printed, a message popped up on my pc that something is wrong with the printer. That became really irritating. I tried to get that message to go away using the methods suggested by others, but no luck. Now with the new toner cartridge, I’m so glad not to have that irritating message any more.

Set it to economy and print close to a case of paper

I’m a law student. I print… a lot. I am on my third TN450 refill in two years, and typically get 8-9 entire reams of printing done per cartridge. The ink is good quality and prints nice and dark, even when everything is configured to save every last drop. There are also some hacks around the internet for printing until there’s absolutely nothing left in the thing that I understand will push another couple hundred pages. I know at least one person who has done this successfully, but I have not tried.

I should note that buying the TN450 (extra capacity) drums here on Amazon is usually about the same price as buying the standard capacity ones at your favorite office supply store. That’s a gigantic savings.

Installation is quite simple. Use the little release lever to take the toner unit out of the drum. Remove the plastic from the new one (orange piece on one side) and fit it in. It will only fit one way and will lock in easily. You can then pack up the old one, tape it up, and send it on its merry way. If Brother has forgotten to give you a recycling label, you can request one at their website.

While you do need to sign up, in a year they’ve sent me exactly two emails: one that said “thanks for signing up” and another that said “we’ve sent you a shipping label.”

Don’t bother getting anything else

Before you waste money trying to get a generic one of these, you might as well spend the few bucks and get this. I’ve noticed in countless brother printers in multiple offices that these are the only ones that work reliably and actually stick to the paper properly.

That said, google around for your specific printer as most of the time when the printer reports these are "low" they have plenty of toner left. Some printers just require you to hold some buttons and it’ll reset the page counter for the cartridge. Some will require you tape over a hole. Some will require you take off 2 screws and flip the "flag gear" to trick the printer.

Once you figure those out, I get a huge yield out of these without any fading or nastiness. Once I even see a hint of fading, I change it out. You should too as if you run these things completely empty, you do run the risk of damage to the printer itself. Of course, most of the TN450 using printers are so cheap that you might not really care.

Also love that brother gives you a box and shipping label to send back your spent cartridges.
