That’s the way that Canon designs the printers that use these cartridges, but many 3rd-party ink suppliers ignore this fact and offer ink cartridges that do not use the proper type of ink. It’s especially bad if they use pigment-based ink in their 251 cartridges as this type of ink will clog the print heads or the printers that use them. Ask the seller before buying if they don’t provide that information in their listing.

The inks are Pigmented (PGI) and Dye-Based Ink (CLI – or "Chromalife"). Pigment inks are generally a solid choice for most people from what I understand.

None of the cartridges in this 4-pack are XL. The only XL value pack I find is "Canon CLI-251XL 3PK 3-Ink Value Pack" but this doesn’t include black.

My Canon is a MG6420. My box of 4 CLI-251’s indicate these cartridges are for Canon models MG6420, MG5420, and iP7220.

The 250 Cartridge is for your text and is Pigment based ink whereas the 251 black is for your "color" images or anything that needs sharp dark color and is dye based. This is why the 250 is larger because Canon assumes you are going to be printing more text than pictures/color output. Hope this helps!

The PGBK is an additional black cartridge that is required for my Canon MX 922 to operate. It is about 50% wider than the CLI 251 black cartridge and from what I recall the printer draws from the 250 when printing text. My printer will not operate without all five ink cartridges. It has 22 ml, compared to 15 ml for the regular-sized one.

You have to look for a company on Amazon that includes the gray with it I use Greensky to buy from as it is the best buy for the cannon and so far I like what I see so far for pictures, Other wise you have to buy the gray seperate.

The 250 BK is the XL and the regular size is the 251. If you are ordering this ink pleas note that if it is not an authentic Canon, it will not work. All three of the 250 BK XL fits the PIXMA MG5420, not 6420.

The one sold by ORIGINAL SUPPLY contains 7 ml of ink, and is ORIGINAL and genuine SUPPLY.
Do not settle for less than best.

Cannot believe if people don’t have the answer, they still post! Here’s the breakdown. PGI250 (Normal Yield Black) is 300 pages. The Black XL version (PGI250XL) is 500 pages. The standard colored cartridges (there is no "XL") are 180 pages. In the world of of expensive ink jet cartridges, the Canon is the best deal.

Don’t know how many in each mode. I have printed around 5 shipping labels and around 10 pages of documents and most of my ink is out already. I have sent them a message asking if maybe I received defective cartridges.

I imagine refilling is messy at best, impossible at worst! But take the cartridges to Office Depot and get $2 credit for each one–and then there’s some special bonus (sorry, I was so boggled by the $2 that I didn’t hear much that followed) after a certain point.

Never had any trouble with these replacement cartridges, and never had a desire to go with a third-party version. There are a couple things to keep in mind.
Double check the part number in your printer before you buy. Lots of these look alike on the Amazon pages, and I’ve accidentally ordered the wrong version and couldn’t use it.
I recommend you find a local source as a backup. Given Amazon’s current inclinations, there’s no guarantee, as with AWS, that Amazon will permit you to buy more if you print out something that conflicts with the political leanings of Jeff Bezos.

Genuine Canon ink cartridges ensure that the print head will output its highest quality print. I needed to replace old cartridges that had dried up. You should always replace cartridges that have run dry asap to prevent damage to the print head. (I learned that lesson the hard way. I had to buy a replacement printer because a new print head costs almost as much as a new printer. The old print head had dried ink clogging it that I could not clean out.)

Results are much better than any online photo store I’ve used – i.e. CVS, Snapfish, Shutterfly.
I used to work in photography and YES there is a difference if you print at home using Canon paper & inks.

The cartridges just do not last very long and not cost effective for me to continue to use.

(I get about 50 4×6" prints loading up all 6 necessary ink tanks using my Pixma 7520.)

After reading reviews, have been trying to ‘push it’ and print after lights come on to change ink. So far it is true that I can print a lot more that way. . .
Would LOVE for these inks to be cost effective because they are stunning.

The quality is beautiful, especially when printing photos. I’ve been using translucent paper and so far so good. I think the quality would be a lot better if I only knew how to locate, Paper Type, on my iPad Pro. The price for the ink in my opinion is extremely high. Also, I can’t really comment now on the longevity because I haven’t had anything long enough to judge. So I gave, “Longevity” a 1 out of 5 ⭐️ because I cannot really judge this area at this time.

I had some bad experiences with after market inks so I now always pay for the quality Canon inks. I am using them in my home printer so I am only interested in easily replacing the tanks; probably obvious that there is never a problem with a Canon Tank in a Canon Printer. And I want a reasonable life; I use all the ink before it dries up in the tank. My wife occasionally print a photo on photo paper which prints very nicely.

Reliable quality & installation fit, but, rather expensive.

Although, less expensive brands’ ink packages often do not include a grey ink.
In that case, this stand alone is a handy fill-in for their shortcoming.

It’s the same price as the store if not a few cents cheaper and you get it in 2 days. It works with my printer and I don’t have to get out of the house. Also, Amazon reminds me if I need to restock. It’s convenient and I love it.

Works really well – older printer was 13 years old this one has lot of newer features like being able to print both sides just like printers at work, and having a cartridge for each color. Only cost just over $100 and will probably save me a lot on paper and ink plus instead of having a flatbed scanner and a printer separate from one another I now have in one unit. Also, my old flat bed scanner had a lot of scanner errors, so it was past time to get this I think. Also now have had for 3 years (the printer not the cartridges) – I got a bit mixed up here in my initial review apparently – the cartridges don’t appear to have an expiration date and since my wife and I don’t print much this is a big advantage for us.

These print well, and the colors appear to be correct for the Canon photographic printing applications. But, as always, they are much too expensive for the amount of ink. And the XL sizes weren’t available at Amazon.
