If you’re a parent, you know that sleep is one of the basic necessities of life (and not just for us parents either!). And while sleep seems like something that comes easily, sleep training can be one of the most difficult things a parent has to deal with—things can get downright exhausting! That’s why baby sleep machines, like the Hatch Rest sound machine, are so beneficial. The Hatch Rest provides soothing, comforting background noise to help your baby fall asleep and stay asleep, and also helps mama and baby get a better night’s sleep. If you have a new baby, you know that newborns have a tough time sleeping, and that sleep is something you don’t get enough of. The Hatch Night Light Sound Machine is designed to help your baby fall asleep faster and stay asleep. It’s powerful enough that parents can hear everything that’s happening in their little one’s room while the baby sounds are soothing enough to lull them into sleep. This sound machine also works as a night light, with a soft glow that lulls your baby to sleep.
Facts About Hatch Rest Baby Sound Machine, Night Light, and Time-to-Rise Sleep Trainer
It is possible to control the light and sound settings directly from the device, BUT in the newest app update they added a “Toddler Lock” feature that fixes this problem. During program run-times you can disable all controls on the device itself, so our kids can’t override our programs. It’s been very helpful for us.
Yes each device is managed separately in the Hatch app, really easy/inuitive. I actually have one for my toddler and newborn too – it’s the only sound machine out there that I came across that you can program by time!:)
Great question! If there is any overlap, the second program will override the first. For example, if your bedtime program runs until 8:05am, and your morning program is set to start at 8:00am… your Rest will switch from bedtime to morning at 8:00am.
If you have any other questions, reach out to [email protected]!
Yes. You can turn on and adjust the light and sound on the device itself. You can schedule programs that will run at the appropriate time even if the phone is not nearby.

It just comes with a standard US plug (110v), but it is just a micro USB cable, so any 5v USB power supply and a micro USB cable should work fine.

No, the programs have to be set on your phone otherwise it will stay on until you shut it off
No. You leave it on. You can turn it on/off, change settings, etc via Bluetooth phone app.

Can this product be used in Europe? Is it 110/220? Is there a website for shipping there with a European plug? my daughter really wants this but is living in Europe.
This plugs into the wall
No. You can only use the music/white noise that comes preset on it.
No, only the preset sounds.
Info About Hatch Rest Baby Sound Machine, Night Light, and Time-to-Rise Sleep Trainer (Reviews From Amazon)
This is my first ever Amazon review, but I loved this product so much that I felt I had to share my experience! I bought this out of sheer desperation simply for the “ok to wake” function. My 18 month old had been waking between 5 and 6am for over 6 months, and literally nothing I did helped him sleep any later. We already had a cheap white noise machine, so when I first heard of this product, I balked at the price, thinking I didn’t need it for the other features. I first purchased a cheaper “ok to wake” product, but found it difficult to operate, and poorly designed and made. I finally purchased the Hatch Rest, thinking if it didn’t work out, at least Amazon would let me return it.
Now, I had serious doubts about my 18 month old’s ability to understand and abide by the “ok to wake” concept. But mom needs a little time to herself in the morning, so I was willing to give it a shot despite my reservations. The beauty of this product is the app and Bluetooth capability. I set the clock for 6am the first night and told my son that when the light turned green in the morning, he could get up for the day. For the record, my 18 month old can only say about 10 words… but he seems to comprehend a lot. The next morning, he woke at 5:30. I wasn’t about to let him cry for 30 long minutes, so I opened the app, changed the wake up time to 5:35, and then when the light turned on, went into his room and did a big dramatic wake up. I said, “look, your light is green, that means it’s time to wake up!” I then turned on the lights, threw open the curtains… made a big deal of it. Over the next few days, I gradually set the clock back little by little, and he started sleeping a little later each day. After a week, I was able to set the clock to 7:30 (my ideal wake up time for him). He woke the first few days a little earlier, and I would just tell him through the baby monitor talk function that his light wasn’t green, and I kid you not— he laid down and went back to sleep until the light came on. Now if he wakes a few minutes early, he just plays in his crib and waits for the light. I can’t believe that this worked, but it did. And now I feel like I have to spread the word!
I actually loved this so much, that I bought a 2nd one for my 3 year old. He loves it. He plays in his room until his light comes on at 7:30, and also stays in his room to play or look at books during “quiet time” in the afternoon. He loves choosing a nightlight color and sound on the app every night. I truly cannot say enough positive things about this product… try it!
Are you an anal retentive mother like me? Then boy, do I have the product for you! I spent a lot of time researching sound machines and initially purchased this for our newborn. It worked great for nighttime feedings as you can adjust the light brightness from your phone. Have a big blowout that occurred at 2am? Fear not. This light will get you through that changing without having to wake the baby with bright overhead lights.
BUT enough about the baby.. we also have a 4 year old who thinks sleeping is for the birds. He would rather run laps through our house at 3am than sleep like normal human beings. So we recently moved this sound machine into his room as it works as an Ok-To-Wake machine. We color coordinate for times to wake up and when to stay in bed. If he wakes up crying at 3am complaining that he’s bored, I simply crank up the white noise (at a reasonable decibel), drown out his cries, and pray he falls back asleep. So far it’s worked like a charm!
Now, I schedule my children’s daily feedings and naps Kate Gosselin style, so this sound machine fits the bill. You can program it for certain times of the day and train your children to see the light and act accordingly. There are other cool features such as simply touching it with your finger to turn on and you can play your favorite settings all with the touch of a finger.
I did order a different sound machine for my daughter’s room but will be switching back to the Hatch (*wink wink Hatch company). It provides much more light for feedings and the white noise is not as harsh as other machines I have had.
The media could not be loaded. I’m a believer in this concept and love the the ability to access the item from my phone. My two year old hit a fast and furious sleep regression. He started waking at night and very early in the morning and would try everything to convince us to let him get up. The first night i used the “ok-to-wake” feature it worked! We talked about it before bed. I let him choose the color that meant “sleep” (he chose red.) He woke once in the night and i reminded him that he had to sleep until the green light came on (as he wasn’t able to quantify what “wait until morning” means). At 7am on the nose he stood up and declared “morning!” (Got a sticker for his sticker chart as a reward).
You could certainly achieve this with a $2 nightlight on a timer, but i like that you are able to customize a “program” and keep the message consistent even when the schedule can’t be. For example, my son has to wake up extra early 2 days/week to go to my mom’s. I am able to schedule a different wake time for those days to keep the message of seeing the green light when it’s time to wake.
Great for naptime too. If you have to cut one short, or if kiddo is not falling asleep and you’re ready to give in, you can change the light before you go in, so that once again, you can keep the message consistent.
I also like that i can turn the “red” light on before we go into his room so that he immediately knows its time to rest when we enter his room.
Lastly, I already have a sound machine so I wasn’t planning on using that part of it, however my son started waking when my husband was walking down the stairs when he left for work, so i turned on additional white noise before he left in the morning to help drown out more noise, as his sound machine is on the opposite side of the room so now he is surrounded by white noise.
I’m sure this won’t solve all sleep problems permanently but so far so good. Worth the $$!
I would like to start off by saying I very rarely give reviews; there needs to be something significantly flawed with a product, or something that exceedingly surpasses my expectations for me to take time out of my day to review a product.
I have now had the Hatch Baby Rest Night Light for about 6 months. We started using it when we decided to sleep train our toddler. It works perfectly and is really easy to use and set-up. I really like the app; I was easily able to customize everything for when he sleeps, wakes, and his nap time. For his night light, I used a soft amber color and in the morning I have it switch to green when he should be waking up. I think he is just now starting to grasp the concept of the colors, but I can see it being a lot more helpful in the near future. I saw some reviews stating that the white noise was louder than they had wanted it to be, but I did not find that to be the case with me. You can easily control the volume of the sound and the brightness of the light with multiple colors.
That being said, here is why this product gets 5 stars. 6 months after I had purchased the night light I received an email from the company with the subject line “Can we send you a new Hatch Baby Rest?” At first I thought it was junk but then I started reading and here is a little bit of the email I received:
“When your Hatch Baby Rest app connects to Rest, it runs a quick diagnostics check to make sure everything is working correctly. When running this routine check on your Rest named “Hatch Rest”, we were alerted to a problem with the sound on your device.
You may not have even noticed it – but we’d like to send you a free replacement. It’s so important to us that your family’s sleep routine stays on track. Please enter your shipping information on the form below and we will send a replacement Rest ASAP.”
I clicked on a link which prompted me to fill out my shipping address and a few days later I received the new Hatch. I honestly did not believe it until the new one showed up at my door. I didn’t even notice that there was a glitch with my old one. Obviously this company cares about their customers and the quality of their product which I find to be extremely rare. Thank you Hatch Baby, 5 stars is not enough!!!!!
I researched sleep trainers several months ago when my 18 month old began regressing and waking up between 4am and 5am every single morning. I tried altering bedtime schedules, but nothing was working and I was becoming more and more exhausted (and desperate!). I found a similar product, but I hesitated to buy, as the unit had to be set up manually on the unit. Also, it gave 3 colors indicating sleep, quiet play, then ok to wake. My daughter knows her colors, but I wasn’t confident that this would be easy enough for her to understand quickly. I gave up, and another 2 months passed with no improvement. I decided to look again and found the Hatch Baby Rest. I somehow missed this product on my original search, and I am so sad that I did. I decided to take a chance, and this thing is absolutely amazing! It took a few tweaks to get the best setup for us, but the options are truly limitless. The app is fantastic and intuitive and can be set up in minutes. After several weeks of use, my daughter sleeps til around 6am, and I am still slowly pushing it later bit by bit. She completely understands now that if the light is off, it is time to sleep and mommy comes in her room when the light is on (green, in our case). I have also been able to remove her sound machine, so this is an all in one for us. The only 2 super minor changes I would make would be to add a fan sound (the ocean waves are as close as it gets to a fan sound) and change the time setup to the clock option (see picture 1). Currently, the Turns On time can be easily using a clock in the app, however, the Turns Off time has to then be calculated (picture 2), which seems more difficult than it needs to be. I would like to see the clock feature for both. All in all, I would recommend this to anyone with kids. It has truly been life changing and I am excited that it has so many capabilities to remain useful for years to come.
UPDATE: After 1 year, we are still loving our Rest! I emailed Hatch with my recommendation to change the Turn Off time, they actually did it (I won’t take full credit, but it is so awesome to see a company who actually listens to customers!) I have included a 3rd picture to show that the Turn Off now calculates the clock time for you rather than relying on sleepy parent math in the dark!

We needed a night light for our 3-month-old’s nursery and this has fit the bill beautifully. To be clear, this machine works via Bluetooth, NOT via WiFi. This has advantages and disadvantages which I’ll mention below. Overall, though, there’s a lot to love about this machine and only a few small quibbles I have with it.
What’s great about this machine:
1) It looks stylish — modern yet neutral. And because the light can be just about any color, it can fit in with whatever color scheme your room is.
2) It’s easy to use. The downloadable phone app works for both Android and IOS and is very self-explanatory. Programs can be set to start and finish at any time each day (or set days of the week) and include settings for light color and brightness as well as your choice of sound (or silence) and the volume of the sound.
3) The sound machine function produces a wide range of soothing background sounds: “woodsy” noise (crickets), rain shower, white noise (like television static), singing birds, ocean waves, rippling water, a laundry machine, and three different sets of melodies. These sounds are surprisingly not nearly as annoying as I assumed they would be — most of them are actually quite nice.
4) The “Okay to get up” feature will be great when our little one becomes a toddler. Basically, just set a program for a particular color to turn on at a certain time in the morning so your toddler knows it’s “okay” to get out of bed for the day. I have no doubt this will come in handy!
A few things I’m not as wild about:
1) The volume of some of the sounds could stand to have a wider range, particularly on the lower end. For example, the white noise sound is quite loud, even on the lowest volume setting. We have it dialed all the way down and it’s passable but still almost too loud.
2) The ability to program sounds and lights is a great feature, but it would be nice to be able to start a program on demand instead of only at a pre-set time. For example, we have our “overnight” program set to begin at 9 p.m. and end at 6:30 a.m., but sometimes our little one goes to bed a few minutes before or after 9:00. It would be nice to be able to start the overnight program with the push of a button at, say, 9:08 and have it still end at 6:30 a.m.
3) As I mentioned above, this machine is controllable via a phone app via Bluetooth, not WiFi. On the plus side, this means you don’t have to plug anything into your router, and the connection is very easy to make. On the minus side, only one phone can control it at a given time. My wife and I both have the app on our phones, and if we are both close to the machine one of us might have to close the app for the other to use it. Also, because Bluetooth has a relatively short range, you may not be able to control this machine from more than a room or two away. Then again, this is a night light, not a baby monitor, so the “need” to connect to it from the other end of the house is not as great.
I’m very happy with this purchase and would certainly purchase it again!
*** UPDATE 12/18/2018 ***
We have been using this light for almost a year and a half, and we like it so much we purchased a second one to use for our son who was born a month ago. Although he isn’t sleeping in his own room yet, we have the Hatch set up in our bedroom so he has a night light. So, this is the first time we have used the phone app to control more than one device. You can pair more than one device with your phone, but unfortunately switching between the devices in the app is a little cumbersome because you essentially have to “log out” of one device and “log on” to the other. It’s not difficult, but it seems like a lot of steps. As I mentioned in my main review, I suspect this is because the pairing is via Bluetooth, not WiFi, which limits the complexity of the communication. And as a reminder, only one person can be “logged in” to a device at a time, so if my wife wants to change the volume or the sound and I was the last person to make a change, she can’t do anything until I log out on my phone.
Fortunately this light will probably be used on a set schedule most of the time, so accessing it via the phone app is probably not something you will do very often once your have a set routine.
This really is an incredible product. I’m so happy that I came across this. I was going to order a sound machine/light that was either a third or half the cost, but after research, I decided to go w this one. First off the design is clean and beautiful. It can be used as a nightlight as well. The sounds are so crisp and soothing and realistic. The colors are beautiful. The sensor is insanely practical- along with the phone app to control. I’ve had this for 2 months. At first, I plugged it in and it didn’t turn on. I thought it was broken and was pretty bummed. So I emailed the company explaining what was going on, and I received a reply almost immediately. Really- in the next hour maybe. Super soon.. so it turned out there’s a small reset hole on the bottom or side I just had to poke it with a paper clip. I just moved my baby to her own room, but before that she was in a bassinet in our room. If she would wake in the middle of the night and cry, I would just change the static or rain sound to a lullaby FROM MY PHONE APP (Bluetooth) and she would by quiet and go back to sleep. I didn’t have to get out of bed! I use this for my 7 month olds naptimes- I just tap the top and walk out of the room. I also set it for her to sleep at night without color and with the lullaby playing. I have my favorites preset- I loooove the colors and the rainbow option. They’re constantly working to improve the product (I’ve received 2-3 emails either updating me on new software or them asking what they can do to improve.. it doesn’t even need improvement but what they have changed/updated is amazing.. for example- a toddler option so toddlers can’t change the settings or the sound scale so you can see how loud or how quiet the sound is. I can’t say enough good things about this sound machine. And also, a phenomenal company. she and we both will get (and already get) a lot of use out of this, so the price really is a good investment.
We love our sound/light machines. Both of our girls each have one and I cannot tell you how many times they have come in handy. When one of our girls has difficulty going to sleep or wakes up in the middle of the night I can easily turn on the other child’s sound machine with the use of the app on my phone. This way I do not wake anyone up by entering the room. I can also start the volume on low so I don’t wake them and gradually increase the volume.
We have used it to set a program for our oldest daughter. We have it set to turn green at a certain time each morning so she knows when it is okay to come out of her room each morning. I also have it set to turn off after so long so we don’t have to remember to turn it off.
We have taken it with us while on vacation to block out other noises while our children sleep. It works very well!
I had one issue with getting locked out of the app after an update. I emailed their customer support and I received assistance immediately. The issue was resolved right away.
There are several light and sound options. Pictures are added for reference.
The only feature I wish would change is that you have to turn on your location in order to use the app on your Android. I try to avoid turning on my location so when I use the camera on my phone I do not have a gps tag on the pictures of my children. I often forget to turn off my location so I hope that in the future you will not need to turn on your location in order to use the app.
I have been a lifelong fan of the fan. I must have fan noise when I sleep. You know the kind.. Big. Bulky. Disgusting. Box fan. Right there in the corner of your room. Facing the opposite direction of you bc you’re just using it for the noise. Embarrassing to visitors. You sneeze just by looking at it and the dust collection it’s trapped. Anyways..
I wanted a sound machine that had ZERO air flow for when we brought home our newest member of the family, so I gave this a go. I had seen all the good reviews and had to try it out myself.
We now have four. Yeah. I love it.
-New Moms: I struggled for a long time (three kids) to find the perfect sound machine that played “that perfect white noise” at the perfect volume. Having four kids total, there are times my house is louder than a construction site. Just chaos. Poor little new babies are trying to get some peaceful zzz’s but big siblings aren’t about that nap life. So. I love that this can absolutely get loud enough to drown out life outside the nursery. Also, the light dimmer. It gets plenty bright for nighttime feedings. And with the Bluetooth function I’m not stretching over (c-section mom here, so, hack me in half-ouch) to hit a light button. It also gets verrrry dim as well so if you like to sleep in a dark and cold cave like me, this won’t disturb your hibernation.
-Moms of Toddlers: As I stated, we’re a big white noise fam. But having a box fan in a room with a two year old is asking for an ER trip. My current two year old is HANDS DOWN the wildest personality of the four. So I really needed something safe for his room. This is just that. Does he climb on his dresser (it’s anchored to the wall, chill y’all) to turn it off or on sometimes? Sure. Do I see him laying in bed watching the colors change until he drifts off into a peaceful slumber? Yup.
-Moms of preteens: My 11 year old honestly just likes that she can control this with her phone. She thinks she’s all grown and tech savvy. She likes all the color and sound options and that it’s tailored to her bc she thinks the whole world should be. Poor little lamb.
After having one in our baby’s room for 6 months we opted to add a second one in our toddler’s room. They have proven reliable, soothing, and convenient. Variety of light colors and sounds available is appropriate. White noise helps the baby stay asleep when the dog is barking, neighbor takes his motorcycle for a spin, or the lawn mower is going outside. We generally keep her light quite low, but it’s nice not walking into a pitch black room overnight. I also noticed that our toddler wakes up less frequently overnight with the Hatch in her room. It was an exciting novelty for her at first, being able to choose which color and sound she wanted in her room. She knows that she can get out of bed when the light turns green in the morning, so that feature is one that I think most parents of toddlers will appreciate. She’s not a fan of thunder and prefers some light when she goes to bed, so this has been helpful for both. Also makes it easier for us to slip in quietly to pull the covers back up or turn down the air conditioner without waking her. As for the data collection, it’s not something that concerns me personally. We use a different app to log feedings, sleep patterns, etc. I certainly understand why some find it alarming, but at this point what isn’t collecting data about us daily? I’m sure the disclaimer is buried somewhere in the terms of service. Up to you if you find that bothersome or not, but if you are reasonably comfortable with it, I think you will find the Hatch quite helpful from infancy through pre-school.
Update (6/1/18): The company conducted an analysis remotely and determined that one of our units (our first) was from a batch that periodically would fade in and out when playing sound. I noticed it myself on occasion, but it was infrequent, brief, and never woke the baby. They reached out to us and offered to replace the unit free of charge. In addition, we were able to keep the defective unit. We opted to put it in our own bedroom for white noise. Replacement was quick and I felt it was a positive and proactive step from a customer service standpoint.
In conclusion, the Hatch Rest Baby Sound Machine has eight soothing sounds (no music), two timers, a night light, a 10-minute snooze function, and a variable, 90-minute timer. The adjustable volume allows you to adjust as your baby grows. The sounds occur at intervals of 5, 10, 15 or 20 minutes, and the built-in night light switches off after 30 or 60 minutes. The Hatch Rest Baby Sound Machine is suitable from birth.
