Product Description
The fine motor hedgehog (also known as the touch-based motor pathway) is an area of the brain responsible for planning and executing precise movements. Its role is essential for development, and has been proven through various experiments. However, the touch-based motor pathway was recently linked to learning, when researchers discovered that children with lower levels of this pathway had a harder time learning new motor skills. Therefore, optimized learning using this pathway could hold the key to boosting learning in children with developmental challenges.

That being said, I’m sure a set of strong gums / teeth could make permanent indents in them because they are hollow. Each quill has a very tiny hole in each end (1.5 mm wide), probably for manufacturing purposes, but it’s big enough that saliva or bathwater could get trapped inside and grow gunk if you aren’t careful. Each quill is 3 5/8″ long. The circular part that pokes into the hedgehog body is about 5/8″ in diameter and slides 1″ into the body. The ergonomic end for little fingers to hold is a 7/8″ x 5/8″ oval.
Love this toy my grandson does it over and over! Not only good for colors but also numbers and coordination
Maybe by contacting the manufacturer.
Yes, the spikes fit into the shell for easy storage. If planning to use in a vehicle or airplane I would suggest a travel tray.
I would guess if it doesn’t specifically say “BPA Free” I would say it’s not. Just my opinion though.
Sorry to hear your missing a piece, we do not stock replacement parts. Please reach out to the original place of purchase and request a replacement sent please.
The end that fits into the holes of the hedgehog are 1/2 inch while the other end is between 3/4″ and 1″. I would say they are similar to the size of a man’s fingers since I have an average woman’s hand and the thickness of the quills is bigger than my fingers.

Info About Learning Resources Spike The Fine Motor Hedgehog – 14 Pieces, Ages 18+ months Toddler Learning Toys, Fine Motor and Sensory Toys, Educational Toys for Toddlers, Montessori Toys (Reviews From Amazon)
Love this product. It says 18+ months but it was fun for both of my kids (11 months and 3). It’s meant to help with fine motor skills. The spikes are rubber with different colors and you can put them in and take them out of the holes in the hedgehog. The best part is that when they’re done playing the hedgehog opens and you can store all the spikes in there so they don’t get lost. Definitely recommend this product #learningresources
This is a great toy! My 4.5yr old, 18 mo old, and 11 mo old grandchildren all played with it in different ways. The oldest made color patterns, the middle did the expected fitting in and pulling out of the holes, and the youngest was able to pull them out and grab the ‘quills.’ When done the pieces fit inside making it easy to store. I love Learning Resources toys they are well made and thoughtfully designed.
I bought this on a whim because I was looking for another toy by Learning Resources, which I think they must have discontinued. My baby was 6 months at the time and she loved it immediately…now almost a year and it’s still a favorite. I don’t know what makes it so attractive but any baby who comes over wants to play with it and becomes obsessed with the pegs/quills?, carrying them around. I like that they fit it for neat storage/easy travel and the pegs are numbered so babies can learn numbers as well as colors and work on their fine motor skills putting the pegs in the holes. Highly recommend!! And if they ever bring back that Learning Resources heart box of chocolates that puzzle piece together, buy it!
I wasn’t 100% sure when ordering this toy, I as a therapist love it, especially for my younger kiddos. I would recommend, for 3 and under, well made, which is a plus.
Entertaining and great for motor skills!! My 22 month old son loves to put his toys through holes and containers. Lately he’s been obsessed with putting his crayons through any hole and crevice around which keeps him entertained but I had to watch him closely as he would also love to color my walls and furniture. I came across this toy while looking for another toy and thought I’d be perfect, I was not mistaken he loves it!! Another plus is that it’s a great travel toy as you can store the quills inside the shell. We take it with us to keep him entertained during dinner or flights.
Perfect for little hands! My 20 month old is obsessed with this very simple, but very entertaining toy. Great for fine motor skills, direction following, color and number recognition and even learning patterns.
My twelve month old loves this. He loves pulling out the spikes and chewing on them (teething). I like that we can eventually work on fine motor skills by putting them in. Keeps his attention for a decent amount of time. He likes the rubbery feel of the spikes on his teething gums
This toy is so well made ! Both my kids were fighting over it as they fight over all the toys. I love how portable it is to take on trips or on the go to grandma’s house. Love how it builds fine motor skills and counting skills for my three year old. The colors are gorgeous! Won’t regret buying this!
I bought this as a gift for my 2 year old and it is one of her favorite toys now. You can conveniently store all of the pegs inside of the hedgehog, and the compartment snaps closed tightly and securely.
My daughter has really learned a lot from this toy. It is helping her learn to idendify colors, counting, and is really helping her fine tune her hand-eye coordination.
Another great feature of this toy, is the size of the pegs. They arent huge, but they are big enough that I don’t have to worry about my daughter choking on them.
This toy is super adorable. My two year old loves it. GREAT FOR FINE MOTOR! I’m teaching her put in pull out and this is perfect. Also, the pegs go into the inside of the hedgehog for storage so it’s great for traveling with.
