Product Descriptuion

Breast-feeding is one of nature’s most amazing gifts. But many mothers aren’t able to nurse their babies because of problems with the breast itself. Doctors call these “mastitis” or “mastodynia,” and they occur for a variety of reasons, including problems with milk ducts, tumors, or infections. Women who can’t breastfeed often turn to artificial nipples, but they can be awkward, uncomfortable, and downright painful. The Medela Contact Nipple Shield is a soft plastic nipple shield that was developed to help women overcome their breast problems so that they are able to breastfeed their babies.

We take pride in manufacturing our contact nipple shields with 100% pure silicone and all other breast pump products that come into contact with breastmilk with non-BPA plastic materials. This ensures that the integrity of your breastmilk is maintained along with its powerful nutrients and benefits. For added convenience, we’ve included (2) contact nipple shields and a portable carrying case for traveling or when you’re heading out on errands around town. It’s always best to keep a spare contact nipple shield safely protected.

We strongly recommend using our contact nipple shields under the direction and guidance of a physician, lactation consultant, or other healthcare professional to ensure proper use and address any underlying breastfeeding challenges or issues. Medela’s primary focus is on helping moms to successfully breastfeed their babies for as long as they choose. Meeting this goal responsibly is at the heart of everything we do.

Because it was my 2nd child and i had such an ample supply with my first daughter (whom I successfully breastfed til 14 months using a nipple shield the entire time) and i was pumping every 3 hours this time around as well my milk came in within 48 hours while i was still at the hospital. I brought one with me (knowing i may have the same issues this time around again) and started using it and it was the solution for us. She is now 6 weeks old and we are still using it and breastfeeding great.

What material is made of?

Good question. It is made of thin silicone.

Is 24mm the biggest size?

Yes, that is the largest size we currently offer. Have a great day!

Saved my breastfeeding relationship

Overall, these are awesome. They saved my breastfeeding relationship when I was ready to give up. My son has had latching issues from the day he was born. We worked with two lactation specialists which was a complete waste of time — my nipples were bloody and torn apart and I was in complete agony, but they insisted I needed to “get over it” and it would get better. Well, it didn’t, so I switched to exclusive pumping for over a month.

I kept trying to nurse, but my son would have none of it. I was getting exhausted with pumping, and eventually the pumping affected my already lower supply (I have Hashimoto’s and was diagnosed with a lower supply because of it), so I had to supplement with formula for two feedings a day. My husband went in for an appointment with our family doctor and he told her if my issues during friendly conversation. She told him to tell me to try these nipple shields — that they saved breastfeeding for her. So I asked my lactation consultant at the time whether I should try it and she said, “you might as well not breastfeed if you use one of those.” That did not sit well with me, so I decided to go against her advice.

Like my doctor, I can now say they do the same for me. My supply is back up to normal — I produce enough for my son to exclusively breastfeed with no need for formula supplementation. While these are difficult to clean and have a tendency to fall if easily, I’m willing to work with them since they have saved my breastfeeding relationship. The silicon is soft and thin — nursing no longer hurts. I find that many times throughout feedings, I can remove the shield and my son will nurse fine with a good latch.

These are truly a lifesaver for me. I highly recommend them if you are having latching issues. My lacatation consultants never even recommended these despite weeks of discomfort and frustration and me being in the border of PPD because I was so disappointed in myself for failing at breastfeeding. If you are struggling with breastfeeding, I could not recommend trying these more. You don’t need anyone’s permission to try them — if I’d waited for that, I would have given up breastfeeding all together. If your not getting the support you need, take matters into your own hands and do what’s best for you and baby, and if that means going with a shield, do it. It’s better to have a baby on the breast with a shield than not at all.

Absolute Lifesaver!

Here’s the overview:
Pros:
– Less pain
– Easier to latch
– Makes breastfeeding more enjoyable
– May help with a powerful letdown
Cons:
– Need to keep clean
– Can fall off your boob, can be fruustrating with as hungry baby
– One more thing you always need to make sure you have in your diaper bag

After struggling to get a latch that didn’t leave me bruised & bleeding, my hospital lactation consultant gave me one of these before being discharged from the hospital. I instantly went from dreading feeding my baby & wincing in pain (& feeling guilty), to enjoying nursing!

After 6 weeks with nipple shields, my dog got ahold of them so I tried to nurse without them & it’s simply too painful still. I gave it a shot for a few days, but it is still painful & I enjoyed nursing much more with the nipple shield. Since trying to nurse without the nipple shield, my baby chokes while eating. I believe my letdown is too much at times. This was never an issue before, so I believe the nipple shields make the letdown more manageable for baby.
So, I’ve gladly just reordered.

Sometimes the shield is frustrating when my baby knocks it off or having to wash it, it seems like just one more thing to do. But, for me overall enjoying the time with my baby far outweighs the downsides. Also, getting it wet helps it stick better & it wont get knocked off so easily.

I cannot express how grateful I am for this product! I think I would be exclusively pumping if it weren’t for this & I think that would be really tough.

Finally found the right size!

I first purchased two other nipple shields from Target of the same brand, the first in size 24mm, and the second 20mm. I was frustrated trying to figure out what size I needed that would fit, but neither of those seemed right, and my newborn baby would not nurse when I wore them. I found this one size 16 mm and thought I’d give it a shot just in case the other two were too big… I recieved it the other day, was worried to try it in case it didn’t work, but went ahead today after being in sever pain to see if it work. I was so excited to see my son latch with these on! I do believe my milk flow slows down when he’s nursing with these, (either that or he’s going through a big growth spurt and feeding cluster today, which does make sense), but he’s still getting plenty of milk as I hear him making big gulps, and it’s worth it if I can be able to feed my son without crying from the tenderness and pain of being a new breastfeeding mom. The shield is comfortable to me, fits great, helps massively reduce pain and discomfort, but does get snug and a little sensitive to take off after nursing though it fits perfectly. I wouldn’t recommend using nipple cream with it, I recommend cleaning off your boob before each use. I would recommend this to anyone, and encourage people to try different sizes as it took the 3rd one for it to work properly for my son and I.

(I did have many lactation consultants tell me my son latches perfectly, I’m just sensitive in that area as is, so naturally it’s going to hurt like hell after breastfeeding constantly with an almost 3 week old newborn.)

GAME CHANGER

So I’m three weeks in on breastfeeding and was beginning to get extremely sore. Each time I was feeding her I couldn’t get a good latch and it was painful and frustrating for both of us. I ordered these and they were an absolute game changer. Not only does it give us a good latch but it also gives me a barrier so I can heal and feed her without being reduced to tears. Honestly, I never thought a thin piece of silicone could make the whole breastfeeding experience actually enjoyable! Now she can eat all day long and I don’t mind at all. Plus I think this will help her adjust to bottle feeding that we will be starting soon. Thanks!

Made breastfeeding possible

My three month old has never successfully latched without the nipple shield and he does so well with it on, I’ve stopped attempting to wean him off. My nipples are a little flat and he just never got the hang of it in the hospital. The nurse gave me a nipple shield and he took to it right away. Three months and baby is still exclusively breastfeeding, I’ve never had a supply issue, my nipples NEVER hurt, and I suggest them to all my pregnant friends.

Pros: I think the baby took better to expressed breast milk in a bottle since he isn’t attached to my uncovered nipple. My nipples never hurt. I didn’t have a supply issue (that was one of my initial concerns because some women think using the shield caused them to dry up). No frustration with a bad latch while we were learning to breastfeed

Cons: it’s really hard to nurse on your side while wearing one. So much so we don’t bother trying. If you’re breastfeeding in public it’s really hard to get the shield on discretely and then get the baby on. Occasionally you might need to use your fingers to keep the shield in place while maneuving the baby on, it’s tricky.

Life saver!!!

I am a first time mom that is exclusively breastfeeding. I was given this in the hospital to help my daughter latch and it worked!! She is 8 weeks old now and eating wonderfully but I do need to use this st every feeding. I may not have been able to breastfeed at all if it weren’t for this product. The plastic is durable and washed well with soap and water. I do also sterilize it in the microwave. The carrying case is nice so I can always keep one in my diaper bag (g-d forbid I leave the house without one). My nipples are in great condition too!! I am a little sad I couldn’t breastfeed bare but I am trying to ween her off of this. In the meantime this product has saved my life and she is eating efficiently and gaining weight super healthy.

Allows me to keep breastfeeding even with flat nipples…

My baby has a tongue tie and I happen to also have fairly flat nipples- so right off the bat the lactation consultant at the hospital recommended a nipple shield. I got one of these from her and bought this pack when I got home so that I’d have more than one. It’s definitely a pain to have to have more than a burp cloth ready for feeding my little girl as well as washing these in between feedings, but I’m so glad that this tool exists to make breastfeeding easier/possible for us. She really struggles to get latched on just my nipple- we have tried and I continue to try, but at this point she does so well with the shield that I don’t mind anymore. And a great bonus is that my nipples haven’t been cracked or sore yet in the whole month we’ve been breast feeding. I even got some mild thrush/yeast infection on my chest in the beginning and she never did because the shield kept her mouth from actually touching it. I think this is a great tool for people with flatter nipples who are struggling to latch and also would be a great tool for ladies with sore nipples. The case it comes with is nice for on the go as well =)

Absolute must for breastfeeding.

My fourth baby was born suuuuper small, 5lbs at 39 weeks. She’s perfectly healthy, just tiny. Because of her size she has a teeny little mouth and just can’t quite latch right. I had given up nursing and decided I’d just exclusively pump since she was mad about how difficult it was and I was super sore. My lactation nurse gave me a shield and showed me how to use it and OH MY GOODNESS it makes a world of difference. Wish I had this with my first 3 children! No pain whatsoever and baby is able to grab right on since the nipple is long and skinny enough that she doesn’t have to open her mouth wide. I typically use a 24mm flange when pumping (but likely should go down to a 20) and the nurse sized me at an xs which fits perfectly. I dropped it one night at 2am and freaked out so went ahead and ordered several more for the diaper bag and other random places where we frequently feed. Only complaint is the case it comes with is stupid. It’s not big enough to fit the shield without squishing it which bugs me. I ordered a separate container instead

Perfect for tongue tie/lip tie babes

These basically saved my breastfeeding experience. My first two children didn’t have any issues breastfeeding, so I assumed that my third would be the same. Not the case. My daughter has a slight lip tie and it was causing her not to latch very well. It basically ended up making it hurt every single time I fed her, to the point that I was having bleeding/scabbed nipples. O U C H. I tried these shields as a last resort before having her tie clipped and dealing with that recovery process. I’m happy to report it doesn’t hurt at all to feed her anymore! It also allowed my nipples to fully heal so if there are times that I need to feed her in a pinch and I don’t have the shields with me (bc mom brain 🙃) it doesn’t hurt nearly as much as it did. These are worth it for sure! Easy to clean and maintain as well. The case is also super convenient to keep them in good shape and away from germs.

Used!!!!

I like the product but this time I received a used item. Very disappointed!!!

Conclusion

In conclusion, the shield is so easy to use. Just put on the shield, position it on the nipple, and it automatically locks into place. For me, it’s comprehensive, convenient, and reliable.
