Product Description

The Regalo Easy Step Walk Thru Baby Gate is a very versatile gate that, when opened, hinges in the middle and swings out to give 360 degree access. This gate has extra-wide openings, or 38.5-inch wide, which is ideal for doorways, hallways and stairs. Being extra wide, this gate allows the addition of multiple gates, which is a great feature if you have multiple children or pets that need separate access areas. As a mom, you already know that kid-proofing your home is a never ending task. Whether it’s for your baby’s safety or your own sanity, there’s always a new hazard or potential danger for your child. Besides installing safety gates and locks, there are a few other simple things you can do to keep your kids safe. Installing a floor mat under your baby’s play mat or placing a play pen around any sharp corners (such as a staircase) are simple ways to prevent a dangerous fall or injury. (The play pen can help contain the mess as well.)

Buying Guide

This is a pressure mounted gate and must be pressured between an opening to properly function. When installed, the “2-inch” space between the bars is reduced by the pressure between the doorway or opening. Please note the top of page 3 within the Instruction Manual. The gate must be fully assembled within the doorway or opening to eliminate gap between the handle. Also, included in the packaging are wall cups that can be added to the gate for additional security. All of this information can be found within the Instruction Manual that is provided within the packaging.

Facts About Regalo Easy Step 38.5-Inch Extra Wide Walk Thru Baby Gate, Includes 6-Inch Extension Kit, 4 Pack Pressure Mount Kit, 4 Pack Wall Cups and Mounting Kit

if the bottom has molding, would the pressure mount be adjustable for a narrower opening at bottom, versus wider opening at the top of a staircase? t

Yes it would be adjustable for a narrower openening at the bottom (and vice versa) because the top and bottom can be adjusted independently from each other down to 34″ with the extension and 24.5″ without the extension. For example: the top can be at 37″ and the bottom could be at 34 (and vice versa.)” Hope that helps.

Anyone know the amount of space between the bars, in inches? (Trying to see if my kitten will be able to slip through or not)

At the widest where the bars are bent at the gate, it’s 2.5 ” At the wall, there is a narrow space of 4 ” before it angles down to the narrow width, with a great possibility of kitten getting head stuck. There a full grown cat might be able to wiggle through the 2.5, it would be a challenge with the danger of them getting stuck. I wouldn’t recommend for cats, they are curious and will try anything.

How wide is the actual swing door? Afraid my big hips won’t fit through 🙂

I’m not sure why other’s get different measurements but the walk through swing door opening is only 15.75″ according to my tape measure and I am finding it too narrow for the high traffic area I want to use it on. I have to turn slightly to get through – I can’t walk through without thinking about it.

Does the gate open both ways?

Before you install it, the gate swings both ways, but once installed it only opens one way. The directions claim the gate swings both ways, and there’s even a little “lock” at the bottom to allow you to “choose” when direction it swings. Would the tension mounts be able to be let out to reach 41 inches?

Mine is set at 36.5″ with the extender. The extender makes it basically so I didn’t have to unscrew it at all, 1/2″ on each side. It may work, I would go buy one at the store (walmart) and make sure it will fit. Then, if it doesn’t work returning it will be easier. I think it will probably work though.

Do they require hole drilling in walls for installation?

We installed the gate without drilling holes in our walls. While plastic caps are provided to drill into your walls, we did not use them and it stays just fine using the rubber stoppers on either side that won’t wreck your walls.

My boxes didn’t come with the pressure mounted spindle rods. Do you know where I can buy them?

contact the merchant you purchased from or go on line to Regalo, maybe you can order parts there. Respectfully X-GENE

How complicated is to add the extension to the gate because my doorway is 36 inch and I think I will have to use the extension?

I didn’t need the extension, but I did try putting it on and it was very simple. Hope that answers your question.

Will this work for a 2 months old labrador puppy?

No — please do not use for a puppy. My husband just installed and within 15 minutes, my puppy had her head stuck between the rails, wailing and flailing like crazy. I had to pull the entire gate out of the door frame to get her head out. VERY dangerous. Glad I was home to save her. Learned my lesson – need a tensio… No — please do not use for a puppy. Can a 5 year old open it? We only need it to prevent my dog to go into the bedrooms.

Why would you need this for a 5-year-old? I am pretty sure at that age they can manage the staircase and will listen to your commands to stay out of a particular area. Just curious.

Will gate stay open if I want it to?

Yes, the door isn’t spring operated so you can leave it open any amount.

How exactly does it install on a staircase , because I have a wall on one side and the other side is a wooden stair case not a wall

There are top and bottom tension knobs on each side. These knobs screw to adjust to the wall, probably about 1 inch each side. If the side with the wooden stair case has a post that’s quite wide – maybe 5+ inches and flat, it might work. Otherwise, you might have to choose a gate that drills into the wall and stairs… There are top and bottom tension knobs on each side. Otherwise, you might have to choose a gate that drills into the wall and stairs. However, I have still found that it’s fairly easy to bump the gate out of place with a bag of groceries or a laundry basket. If you’re putting the gate at the top of stairs, I’d go for something more secure. We use it in a doorway that leads to the stairs.

Any tips on how to make it more visible at night? It can be hard to see at night, I was thinking glow in the dark duct tape or something.

Best child gate I’ve ever seen. Keeps toddler out of rooms without closing the door.

Can this be used at the top of stairs ?

Per pdf user guide in listing: “To prevent falls, NEVER use at top of stairs.”

One side of our staircase has a railing with spindles (i.e., no wall to mount to). Will this work?

It comes with four wall cups which are recommended to make a firmer mount at the tops of stairs. So depending on how thick and sturdy the spindles are it may or may not work. Of course when you no longer need to use it for a child or pet you’ll have to patch the screw holes after removing the wall cups.

Info About Regalo Easy Step 38.5-Inch Extra Wide Walk Thru Baby Gate, Includes 6-Inch Extension Kit, 4 Pack Pressure Mount Kit, 4 Pack Wall Cups and Mounting Kit (Reviews From Amazon)

Does its job just fine.

The media could not be loaded.  Purchased back in September of 2015 to keep our newly adopted pup from our furniture (we weren’t sure at the time if she would tear up through our furniture if we left her alone). The gate did its job just fine. But then again, we have a 25-lb Chihuahua mix, so we didn’t need a massively sturdy gate to keep her at bay. Now, we did take care of my friend’s 40-lb Shepherd mix who had some major issues with thunder. He would get pretty panicky during a storm and constantly jumped and leaned on the gate. I’m happy to say that he never toppled the gate over. He did manage to jump over the gate some how. Don’t know exactly how, me must have used some secret Parkour skills or something to get over it. So, as far as sturdiness goes, it passes by my standards.

As it relates to durability, I see no issues. Of course, we don’t have kids pull on the bars and bang on the gate, so I just may have not seen any of the issues just yet. If I do, I’ll likely update this review.

As far as operation goes, I like the old version better. The old version was probably a tid bit easier to open with one hand. Now I read a few complaints that this gate requires two hands to open. That’s not true, just look at my video. It’s possible to open with one hand and really isn’t that hard. May take a bit to get used to, but not impossible like some reviews make it seem to be. The major downside I see in the operation of this gate is that it only opens in one direction. The old version of the gate opened both ways, which was really convenient. That said, make sure you have the gate opening in the direction you want. Don’t want to second guess yourself in the middle of installation because its a pain to loosen everything up and flip it around.

Setting up the gate wasn’t hard, but it wasn’t super easy either. You have got to screw those side bars out pretty far to close the gap between the gate latch and the post. And the farther it goes, the harder it is to turn, so get ready to put some elbow grease into it. Once you have the gap small enough so that the gate can lock in place and stay secure, its pretty much guaranteed to be rock solid. One recommendation: buy and use the “Wall Savers for Pressure Gates” if you can (the pressure mounts puts some massive point pressure on your walls). If you don’t, you could damage your wall. In my case, my opening was too narrow to fit the wall savers, so I had the pressure mounts pushing directly against the wall. It didn’t damage my wall, but it did peel off the paint. In an effort to prevent this from happening again, I cut piece off of a Kleenex box and put it between the pressure mount and wall.

In conclusion, as my headline says, this gate does its job, at least for me. As I mentioned earlier, the real major negative on it is that it only opens in one direction. Now if you have 70lb and over dogs to keep at bay, not sure if it’ll be able to handle. My take is that it should, it would just take some major tightening of the pressure mounts.

Solid gate. Crazy dog. Gate wins.

Awesome gate. Tall enough to keep my psycho shitzu poodle downstairs and he has been known to kamikaze over any object we put in front of him. Built strong and stays put too. Great value!

Durable, strong and keeps the giant puppies out of areas they do not belong!

For the reviewers who claim this gate is cheap or defective, you are wrong. Take a moment and read the instructions. Out of the box it appear to be “warped” as others have referred it it – but it is actually designed that way on purpose…so that you can tighten it and create the proper amount of tension. I had it assembled and working in less than 10 minutes. It is durable, strong and fits my door opening perfectly. I have two five month old golden retrievers who destroyed the two wooden gate we had before I found this one. They can’t chew through this gate nor are they able to knock it down through brut force! I am 100% satisfied.

People need to read! Gate is not defective!

I see a lot of people complain that it came bent or that the latch doesn’t fit to the door. Well if you would take the time to read, you would see that it is meant to be that way. So when you returned it and then had the same issue… Well because its made to be like that. You obviously didn’t read. It is bright orange and hangs right by what everyone is claiming to be defective!!! Just read people. Here I posted a photo of what you neglected to read!!!

I bought three of these gates and they worked perfect for the space I needed them for. Though if the space was getting to big then it didn’t seem as strong. But if trying to gate a smaller space this is great!!! Like I said I bought three and they are wonderful! Just try to use for the smaller allowed setting and it will be great. If you go for the larger end of the settings it make be a but flimsy.

But again!!!! The door is supposed to be slanted before installation!!! Read the instructions people!!! I mean for come on how did you miss the bright orange paper that hangs from the gate? It says it is not a defect right there!

I will get again if I need for other spaces.
The gate when open is a bit narrow but nothing that is a problem for me. But if I could recommend anything I would say make the gate open a bit wider. But someone else posted picture with person trying to walk through so have a look.

Good pet gate

We have a two stories house, and we used to allow our dogs to go upstairs anytime they want. We have carpet upstairs and wood floor down stairs, and sometimes one of our dogs will go upstairs at night when everyone is asleep and have an accident (pee or poo). So we decided to buy a pet gate, so we can stop them from going upstairs at night. At least if they have accident downstairs it’s easier to clean up because of the wood floor. The gate works very well, it’s very easy to install and to operate. Only issue I have with it is, when we walk across the gate, the bar (see picture) at the bottom kind of requires extra attention, I almost got myself tripped a few times. And we have two elder people in the house, so that keeps me worried. But other than that, the gate works great.

Easy One Hand Operation – Easy Installation!

The media could not be loaded.  See video to see how easy it is to open the gate with one hand.

I started shopping around for baby gates at my local Buy Buy Baby and realized Amazon offered similar products at a much lower cost! We have these gates at the top and bottom of our stairs and they work great. Our one year old pounds on the gate at the top and leans against it and it hasn’t budged. Since they are held up with rubber pieces by pressure it’s easy to remove if you need to carry something large up the stairs. Also make sure you completely install it before you think that it doesn’t line up properly. The gate won’t stay shut until you actually install it!

Pros:

1. Simple to install
2. No screws or damage to your wall
3. Gate doesn’t have spring so you can leave it open if you want
4. Easy to open with one hand.

Cons:

1. Actual area you walk through is a little narrow
2. I can’t think of anything else!

Attractive, heavy duty gate, latch & hinges are very smooth, might not be best as a toddler gate

I got this for a pretty unorthodox reason but I’m really glad I did cause it’s working out really well for me. I have a litter box for my two cats in the bathroom because it’s the easiest place for us to keep it contained….unfortunately I also have two dogs and they will make a huge mess out of it if I don’t keep them out of there. For a while I was using a regular baby gate but it was such a pain in the butt to have to step over it every time I wanted to go in and out of the bathroom. I also had to put a box on either side of it so that they could get in and out without having to scale the gate so I not only had to step over the gate, I also had to step over the boxes. And taking the more traditional baby gate up and down over and over again is not a fun task so I was kind of at my wits end.
When I got this one I was hoping the bars would be just wide enough that they could fit their heads through but unfortunately they were just a little bit too close together for them to fit…..which ordinarily for most people I’m sure would be a good thing since these are generally used to contain more than one species of creature to one side or the other, haha. After looking at the problem logically for a few minutes I realized that I could actually just mount the gate in the door frame about 5 inches up from the floor so that the cats can pop under it easily but the dogs can’t fit through it. And it works PERFECTLY. The frame of the gate is obviously higher off the floor so I have to remember to step over it and I suppose it could be a trip hazard for some, but I haven’t had a single problem remembering.
Install was actually remarkably easy and it was very well described in the directions – just insert the four pins in the holes at the four corners, hold it in the doorway, and then unscrew the tension cap thingies until the rubber feet are firm against the door. A couple review said it would be better with two people but I did it by myself in 2-3 minutes. I was dumb and didn’t even measure my door frame first (Durp!) but even though the item description says 29″-39″ opening I was actually able to fit it into the 28 1/2″ door frame. Upon first trying it I was actually really afraid it was going to be a bust and not fit even with the tension caps screwed in as far as they would go, but with a little bit of exertion I was able to get it to squeeze in and then only needed to unscrew the caps maybe 1/8″ on either side to get it to stay super firm in the door frame. This one stays in MUCH better than the wooden baby gates that I’ve always used in the past. Even at their tightest with the little notches that the metal piece fits into I could never get nearly as nice, firm fit as this one has. And actually at first I did have it extended too far and the latch kept sticking really obnoxiously but I unscrewed each side just a few turns on and it works very smoothly now. The gate also comes with an extender to make it up to 7 1/2″ longer but I obviously didn’t need that and ended up just storing it in the closet in case I ever decide to use it in a different area.
The latch is extremely easy to use…..which would be a blessing and a curse for most people using it as a baby gate. It does have a little red “lock” that fits over the latch so that it can’t be opened, but I can tell you right now my friend’s very smart 2 year old would have this sucker figured out in a matter of minutes. I’m not really sure how you would avoid that though because unlike the baby gates that have the closure that can just be put on the other side, this one is right on top and pretty easily reachable. Fortunately for me, no matter how brilliant they are, my dog’s don’t have thumbs… 😉
The metal of the gate itself seems really heavy duty and sturdy and all of the fittings were really nice quality as well. I imagine this gate is going to hold up for a long time and I actually think it looks more attractive than the standard wooden baby gates too. My dogs are pretty annoyed I’ve blocked their access but the cats and the rest of the family are all happy not to have to deal with that nasty nonsense anymore. 🙂

Easy set-up and allows my dogs to see/smell/hear but not enter the room

Most of the reviews have already included the specifications, etc., so I won’t add to that. Here is my opinion: this works perfectly for what I wanted, which is to keep my two large German Shepherds from coming into my bedroom. Previously they were allowed to but my dog allergies started to flare up badly and the doc recommended that I keep them from sleeping in my room. Also, I was beginning to get worried about falling over one of them when I got up in the middle of the night (and I didn’t want to use a motion-detector nightlight since it interferes with my sleep and the dogs kept activating it all night!). My dilemma: I didn’t want to close the bedroom door for a variety of reasons including the fact that the dogs have perfected that “hangdog” look when I close the door (and then open it slowly to see what their reaction has been!). This Regalo Easy Step Walk Thru Gate has been perfect. The dogs are relaxed because they can hear and see into the bedroom and I sleep better because I’m not sneezing as much. My allergies have quieted down a bit too. The gate was simple to set up; I had to use the extension that came with it. I only pressure-mounted it because the dogs don’t jump up and try to push it in. If they were more active, I would probably have had to use the wall cups. So far I have not needed to take it down since the latch opens and closes so easily. I don’t keep it “locked” because there are no little children in the house to open it and the dogs, smart as they are, have not tried to do that either, knock on wood!

Update: Good value for a basic gate that has a minor flaw

The media could not be loaded.  This gate works as designed to keep our two toddlers out of restricted areas of our home except for the update noted below.

Unpacking and installation took about 15 minutes because we are familiar with the tension mount design. Unpacking took the bulk of that time.

Our boy has tried to dislodge the gate several times by crashing into it and our girl has assisted him while doing that by trying to climb on top and pull it down. So far it has withstood their barrage. But note that it is installed in a door jamb where the molding prevents it from moving into the room. It is possible that the two of them combined could pull, rather than push, on it and dislodge it. But that is addressed by our supervising our children and discouraging them from doing so. If we were to install this in a location other than a doorway such as the hall entrance, or in a safety critical application such as the top of the stairs, we would not rely on tension and rubber feet alone, we would use the supplied plastic cups and screws. See the video for and explanation of the two mounting options.

Other reviewers dislike the fact that the latch mechanism cannot be undone with one hand. Dad is able to do it with no great effort, but Mom finds it a challenge. Dad believes that hand size and strength plays a small role in her difficulty, but hand coordination plays a larger role. Also the mechanism is new and sticky. He believes that with time and use, it will become easier to operate. Closing the latch mechanism is easily accomplished by both Mom and Dad – simply push down the latch until it catches beneath the red safety catch.

As an aside, you may not want to let your toddler see you do this. Ours will persist in trying to open the gate until they are successful. Hopefully that will not happen until they are of an age whereby we no longer need the gate.

Update: 04/24/2014. Our boy now has the strength to slide the red catch over and lift the latch. He is 22 months. While he operates the mechanism, she pulls the gate open. He can’t simultaneously operate the latch and open the door – yet. They team up to operate it. So it is no longer useful in safety critical areas like the top of stairs.

We withheld a star for one reason (see update below), the lower rail is tall enough to catch our feet as we pass through, not fun with a babe in arms. Installed the top of the rail is approximately 1 35/64″ (a little more than 1 1/2″) above the floor, high enough apparently to catch a foot as you stride across it. Trying to be mindful of that while distracted in umpteen other ways will prove challenging.

Update: 04/24/2014. The issue described above has not been the problem we foresaw. We gave the star back. There are any number of tripping hazards in our house (toys strewn about the floor mostly), this is not one of them.

The gate does not self close or self lock, which is fine in our opinion because we needed two of them and the one’s that do self close and lock would cost a good deal more.

The gate comes in left hand open only, which means that is swings to your left when you pull it open it towards you. Coincidentally this fits our needs. If, however, we wanted it to swing to the right as we pull it, we would have to select another gate. We had not considered that fact before purchase. We had also not considered that we might want to leave the gates installed while closing the bedroom door. Fortunately there is no interference with the door’s knob or function. Other potential purchasers might want to think through configuration before buying this product.

Blocked off apartment kitchen easily.

Our apartment needed some baby gates to block off the kitchen and the hallway/entryway so I got 2 from this brand, in different sizes and styles. Both worked well. They stay on the wall. They are metal and are sturdy. My son grabs onto them and tries to climb and cries like a caged monkey, and the gate still performs admirably. The thing to note with these gates is that they get less stable as the width increases, it’s just physics. So you need to buy gates that are wide enough for the space, but make sure your space isn’t hitting the upper limit of the quoted range. Also, with a wall saver (rubber insert), it gets sturdier. So far, the gate managed to remain locked in position on our really wide hallway.

The gate mechanism itself is great. I love how easy it is to use with one hand. This product works well and even if I hesitated spending this much on a temporary baby gate, I see why this product is worth the money. This specific model only swings one way, so if you want the door to swing in either direction, this may not be the product for you.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it’s easy to understand the appeal of this product. You can easily install it in your home without any tools or professional help. This is very convenient and saves your time and cost. The gate has 2in1 function. It is easy for installation but not easy for uninstall.
