This is just a standard coupler to allow two lines to be connected. No polarity changed.
If there are two lines connected to the phone that you want to extend with "extension chords" (connect to longer phone lines), you would need on coupler for each line.

I’ll admit it, I still have a landline phone with an answer machine to take messages. I am prehistoric, what can I say? In any case, when the line on the phone went dead, I quickly found this was due to a tiny cable coupler which cracked in half when I tested it. Thought this would be easy to find in stores, but apparently not, so went via Amazon. Hooked it up, problem solved, and since it’s a two-pack, have a spare.
I had to move the connection to the router and needed to add a new length of phone cable so as to reach the router at its new location. Found the connectors online for a reasonable price.
We live in a 70 year old home AND still have a landline. I needed to run a long chord from a working jack into our home office. Our answering machine (yes, we still have one of those, too!) is plugged right into the coupler with the long line out the other end. No fuzzy noise. Works like a charm!
