What does 2-roller system mean? Please provide practical explanation.

A "two roller system" means that the laminator has two heated rollers. A "4 roller system" has 2 heated rollers, and 2 nonheated rollers that improve the finishing quality (by pushing out additional air within the pouch). A "2 roller system" is ideal for most small offices, classrooms, and homes. Hope this helps!

will it laminate 5 ml pouches?

Yes!!! It has a specific setting for 3 ml and 5 ml. The 5 ml setting will actually laminate up to 7ml 🙂

Would someone please explain what "pouch" means? I have never used a laminator but would like to. Do I need a separate pouch for each item ?

This machine is a pouch laminator. There are several types of lamination machines. But the end goal of all is to laminate a clear usually plastic film to a paper sheet on both sides of the paper. There are several types of lamination machines. But the end goal of all is to laminate a clear usually plastic film to a paper sheet on both sides of the paper. So this machines uses the pouch plastic film which is double sided and three sides are open and one side is welded together to form what is referred to as a pouch. I have seen two sides welded but those are not the norm. Some laminators however use ROLLS of the plastic film where 2 rolls of film are fed through the laminater at the same time you insert a sheet of paper to be laminated and the end is the same but you have to cut it off the roll once through. You can purchase pouches in various sizes. From small sizes like business card size all the way up to 11 x 15 even sometimes larger. Part of the problem choosing too large a size for a cheap laminator like this is the heat does not last long enough to support that length of run. If your laminator is too cool you get cloudly laminations because the plastic ahdesion wasn’t hot enough to bind with the paper and if it’s wavy your heat is too high. I have two laminators that allow me to adjust the heat but they are more expensive. They also require carriers which some laminators work well with but again you need hotter temps to work through the carrier folder material. Some times when you purchase laminate pouches it comes with a carrier folder. From experience if my laminator of choice heats hot enough to use the folder I use a folder. It almost always prevents any jams and loss of say smaller laminations you may have cut down or used smaller lamination pouches or pockets. If you do foiling with a laminator you may need to make your own folder out of parchment paper or similar or light cardstock. The key is to keep glue or other materials from sticking to your rollers and the other is the protective folder also adds stiffness to the laminate process so it does not get caught and rolled up into the rollers themselves causing a jam. Not all Jam Releases release these jams and that means taking your laminator apart and not all cheaper laminates are built to be opened up. If you get a good one they can be very useful and lead to some creative purposes too not just utilitarian.

how waterproof does it make the paper? would it survive a trip through the washing machine?

They write on the pieces with vis-a-vis markers and then wash and dry them off with paper towels after they’re finished. The edges stay sealed and I’ve never had a problem with water getting inside. I would think something would survive a cycle in the washing machine because these pouches are really thick – much more so than regular laminating film. Good Luck!

will this laminate photos without damage to the photo?

I am by no means a professional but everything I have laminated with this machine has been U damaged including state licenses and pictures. However, if you should want to take the lamination off for any reason, it will tear the picture or document. It sticks very well and I’ve not had any problems with it.

If I don’t use Scotch pouches, will this machine not laminate very well?

Scotch pouches are a better quality no doubt. For important papers I highly recommend scotch pouches, they are thicker and durable. This laminator does work with other cheaper pouches, the quality is not the best though.

Can I laminate 110-lb cardstock with this and then cut through the page without peeling edges?

Laminating 110 lb cardstock through this laminator might be a problem. I used regular paper with mine, and the edges didn’t always stick together. I had to feed some bookmarks through twice. I hope this helps some.

Our old laminator used carriers. The paper went in the laminator pouch, it all went in the carrier before going in the laminator. No carriers needed?

No carriers needed on this one. I actually used a carrier the first time I used it, b/c my old laminator used them as well, and there wasn’t enough heat to seal the document. It works beautifully without the carrier, though!

Does this laminator work well with sheets that are 5 mil as opposed to 3 mil?

This laminator laminates well on both settings the results r the same clean and sturdy. I frequently laminate 3mil sheets as apossed to 5mil; but keep the setting on 5mil and still end up with a good product. I hope i was able to answer your question.

can use any plastic

There are *MANY* different types of plastics. I think you would probably be OK to use any brand of laminator pouch. But if you have in mind using something like Saran Wrap or Zip-Lock bags, you will wind up with a sticky, ruined mess, which will probably ruin your laminator.

Can cardstock be laminated using this machine?

I’m sorry, but I don’t know. The machine has two thickness settings (3 mil and 5 mil) and the instruction booklet that came with the machine says that it will handle thick papers up to 5 mil, like business card stock. I hope that answers your question.

Has anyone noticed strong chemical smells when using this machine? I had to open a window to clear the air. Is this normal or is something wrong?

My current one smells horrible and my old one has no smell. Wonder if something is wrong with it.

If you just use regular paper, is the finished product flexible or stiff? I want to laminate something so that the finished product is stiff.

The laminator itself doesn’t determine the stiffness of the finished product. I ordered the 100-pack of the Scotch Laminating Pouches from amazon along with the laminator; they are 3-5 mil and are stiff, heavy-duty, comparable to laminations I paid $1.10 per page for at a local office supply store. I have been extremely satisfied with this purchase and have saved a lot of money as I create many flashcards for my college language classes.

Has anyone else had the laminator "eat" their item they’re laminating or is this an isolated incident for us?

How long does it take to laminate a 5mm business card (2.25 x 3.75 pouch)?

I laminate a 8.9" x 11.4 " pouch in about 10 seconds .

Happy With My Purchase

The media could not be loaded.  It’s only my first day of usage but already loving it! Heats up fast, great adhesion, no bubbles, what a score! I will say, though, that it’s got a distinct smell while it’s on, even prior to use. Hoping that’s normal but other than that, great price and great product. Recommend!

love this machine

‘This is my second laminator. My first one finally quit , I believe it was probably my own doing. It served me well. I cut out very detailed snowflakes , when gifting them or displaying them some of them tore very easily. So I started thermal laminating all of them. I can honestly say I have laminated more then 10,000 snowflakes over the past two years. I use very inexpensive copy paper, 500 sheets per pack. Since July of this year I have cut out and laminated 3 packs . This machine is a beast, I used some very fine glitter on some of my snowflakes before laminating them. Some sealed without problems , after that, well I had to order a new one . Now snowflakes with glitter get introduced to an inexpensive iron I purchased. I believe my first laminator would still be running strong . I took it apart and was able to see the glitter wasn’t flat enough causing friction between the two rollers in the laminator , therefore causing the rollers to turn inconsistently. LESSON LEARNED. I give this machine 5 stars because I know how much I used it and how wonderfully it did the job.’ THANKS FOR READING , HAPPY HOLIDAYS.’
*UPDATE* thousands of snowflakes later, still working great. I again have to order more pouches.
These snowflakes really have become an obsession. This machine is in my opinion a little work horse. It has continue to perform well for me every time I turn it on.
I again would recommend this laminating machine.
THANKS AGAIN ☺

Works great so far

The media could not be loaded.  So far so good. Only used it for 2 days laminating about 20 sheets. 5mil setting for 3mil sheets melted the sheets- regular 3mil setting works just fine for 3mil sheets. Don’t know why some had to use higher setting for 3mil. Will update upon further use or problems. Used by primary school teacher.

BEST LAMINATOR EVER AFTER 800 PAGES IT PASSED THE PROOF!

Ok, if I could give the Scotch Thermal Laminator 2 Roller System 1000 stars I will give them all!!! I was skeptical and afraid to buy a laminator as the amount of work I needed to do was a lot. When I mean a lot, means a lot, I had to laminate 800 pages (menus for a restaurant) I first went to Staples to get a quote and for the whole job it came out to $600 dollars. I was left with no choice to get one, and after looking over several laminators, I thought to give it a chance to this one, and the $37 price could not be bid. I even thought to buy a second one in case this one broke after so many laminations, but not at all! The laminator heated after 3 minutes, then I started and after 4 hours and while reading a book all my 800 pages where laminated perfectly, no bubbles, no mess, no wrinkles and no jamming either. I didn’t even need to turn it off and on, and it did not overheat. One of the best investments I had made for my office and restaurant!

Wow!

The media could not be loaded.  Due to covid-19 a lot of us had to start remote learning and of course my kids were no exception. If you have kids and receive school paper work you know that it’s pointless to try to keep papers from bending or ripping especially if it’s a toddler. As per the teachers request I got a laminator and for $22 and I had to get the Scotch Laminator. This is my first time using a laminator and it was so easy for me to use it. When you heat up you will get a little smell but nothing too strong. It takes almost 3 minutes to heat up and it makes no noise. I inserted a video sorry but my fan was on so you will hear some buzzing in the back but that’s my fan not the laminator. I went for a cheaper name brand laminating paper but it works great with it. I definitely recommend this laminator it doesn’t take that much space and it works great. Don’t know how long it will last but for now it’s perfect.

Wish I had purchased sooner!

The media could not be loaded.  I love this thing! Teacher here, I had used my sister’s personal laminator and loved how sturdy the lamination came out, she has the Amazon basics laminator & sheets. I was highly considering getting that one but have had a slight issue where the corners would crease if you put it in slightly crooked which was east to do. This laminator was two dollars less, heats up just as quickly, has a separate setting for 3 ml and 5 ml and a wider opening with guide edges to keep you from wrinkling the corners. Do yourself a favor. Go ahead and buy this thing ASAP 😂 make those warm lamination dreams come true! Sidenote, I ordered the Amazon basics letter size laminating 3 3 ml pouches, these come out more clear than the (sample size) scotch brand lamination sheets that come with the laminator itself.

High quality laminator for CHEAP!

The media could not be loaded.  This laminator is the BEST! I actually own two now. I am working on a big project (laminating over 700 sheets) and it worked so well, I got another to speed things up. If you are used to an industrial/large size laminator, the speed takes some getting used to but I have had ZERO problems. No jams, no overheating, no anything! I honestly thing a lot of these negative reviews may be “operator error.” Even though this machine doesn’t have the anti-jam technology the more expensive one does…mine has never even had a sputter. If you put the pouches in straight and correctly and don’t do too many at a time (about 25 in a row is the most I’ve done), and take them out when they’re done, it’s a breeze. I highly recommend this laminator!!!

My precious……

Bought this in October of 2017. I use this very regularly, laminating all my educational resources for homeschooling. I’ve used lhe Amazon basic laminating sheets and a store on here called “packing supply” both at a 3 mil thickness. I’ve only had one jam and that was because I let my daughter feed it through lol but after I got it out, it still continues to work well and that happened in the early days of my laminating relationship. This thing has been a trooper. Very reliable.

Lot’s of bang for the buck

I’m quite happy I selected this laminator for my project of putting together a pre-school program for my granddaughter. I read reviews on several laminator’s and all had some negative notes (as did this one) but I decided this was the best of the bunch for the price range I was looking for. Here’s my pro’s vs con’s:

Pro’s:
1-this thing is a work horse! I laminated 50 pages one after the other and it never blinked.
2-heats up quickly and is super easy to use, simply feed it in and let it do its thing.
3-price, this was actually one of the cheaper laminator’s I looked at and one of the best rated for it’s price point.
4-perfectly laminated every time – no bubbles, wrinkles or warping. For those reviews that stated the pages wrinkled I really wonder if they fed the page in backwards – I could see it happening if they did that but my pages came out spot on perfect every time.

Con’s:
1-not the speediest – I timed my machine and it took 52 seconds to laminate a 9×11 page.
2-my machine makes a weird sprocket noise. I assume this is a “normal” roller noise for the machine but it does get louder the longer it is in use so who knows. On the plus side – when I shut it off and it cools down the noise is negligible on start up, at least for a bit until it gets good and warm again.
3-I really feel there should be a retractable guide arm for the pages entering the machine. I got a little wonky guiding a couple of pages in and had to remove them and start over. Which leads me to the #4 con.
4-the release lever is a pain to use – it’s very stiff and you have to hold the top of the machine (which by the way gets pretty toasty) to actually release the page. I ended up pushing the end of the machine into my belly to actually get the release lever to work. Long story short – be careful how you feed the pages into the machine and you’ll be ok.

So over all I would absolutely buy this machine again. I’ve only laminated 150 pages in 3 days but I am very pleased with it thus far.

Definitely worth the price!!

I was going back and forth between purchasing this machine and the Amazon brand. Although I don’t have first hand experience with the Amazon brand, I can tell you this machine has been awesome so far. I was swayed to this brand because the Amazon reviews mentioned jamming quite a bit. I have laminated around 30 pages so far and this brand has not jammed once. However, I wonder how much of the jamming was user error. I say this because you need to be focused on the machine and keeping the pages lined up. At one point I decided the machine had it under control so I became distracted. When I looked back down the paper was feeding improperly and almost jammed. I was able to fix it before that happened. So now I focus on my laminating task and I have had no problems. I saw other reviewers mention a bad smell from the machine and I’ve only had that the first time I turned it on. Thereafter there has been no odor. Lastly, the machine does get quite hot if you are laminating a lot of pages. But for a page here and there is doesn’t get that bad. I’m so happy with this machine and not spending $3.00 for one page at my local office supply store.
