Facts About Verbatim DVD+R 4.7GB 16x AZO Recordable Media Disc – 100 Disc Spindle (FFP) – 97459, Branded, 100pk Spindle FFP

Are these DVD’s rewritable? They have the "RW" on the case but the description says "write once".

No they are not rewriteable. In this case the RW signifies read-write. That means you can read from them and write to them. This item is marked DVD+R. If they are marked DVD+RW they would be rewriteable. They have to have the RW behind the disc description. Ex. CD-RW, CD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD+RW would signify all rewriteable disc’s.

What is the difference between "Branded" and not?

They also use 2 different manufacturers that I am aware of. The superior quality Verbatim AZO discs, are manufactured by Mitsubishi, which should be the product on this page. The Verbatim DataLifePlus/DataLife Series are a lower quality product, manufactured by CMC Magnetics. Neither type of disc are actually manufactured by Verbatim themselves. This is a very common practice among most CD/DVD/BD recordable disc brands.

Verbatim life series dvds are reported to be lower quality and less reliable. i don’t want life series. are these life series dvds?

I don’t remember them having "Life Series" on the label, so I doubt it, but in any case, I used them ALL without one problem ~ THEY WERE FLAWLESS!

What color are the backs of these discs? Like the side you would not write on/label. Thanks!

Shiny silver like ALL discs side you do not write on.

Can i record off my tv with this

I am able to with my DVD recorder. But I suppose it would depend on your recorder and the content provider you have.

is each disc 4.7 gigabytes?

yes 4.7 for me they are very good disc.

How big are the disks?

There is a weird picture on the product page that appears to say the disks are 2 inches across. (!) There are such things as mini optical disks in the world but rarely sold like this. Perhaps the original question was about physical size (diameter) — not storage capacity.

Looking at all the other images and information here I have to assume these are standard 5" or so, like every other CD or DVD you’ve seen. Amazon once again throws confusion in with these weird pictures. Hope this helps.

But I have never actually counted them.
The 100 pack is cheaper but the 50 pack is easier to deal with and count.

you can burn up to 2 hours. it usually takes about 5 – 10 minutes.

Folks these DVD disks are getting harder and harder to find.
I use them to create a installable LINUX operating system. I do record from time to time but mostly for
the operating systems.

If you still use DVD products, it would be in your best interest to get some and store them. shelf life is 10 to 20 years depending on how you store them and where you store them. They are definately temperature sensitive.

These Verbatim DVD+R are among the best, I have had very little trouble with them if any, very reliable and even the discs that tend to get roughed up (scratched) still work most the time.

A Very Reliable Product Compared to Other Brands On The Market

I’ve Used this brand for over several yrs. with 97% of successful results – with error recording issues, compare to other known brands. Also the cost of these blank discs is very compatible with the amount of blank discs included in each pack – set. The recording – clarity – sound & playback isn’t an issue. Apparently this brand is very popular & sells out quite often in Stores that carries blank recording media. So very happy I was able to order this product from AMAZON & have it delivered to my neighborhood AMAZON – Locker Hub. *****.

i love these so far!

i love these so far! i used to use taiyo yuden dvd-r dvds until they sold out to another company! anyway, i’ve used these for multiple purposes for probably 3+ years now and seem to like these! my only concern is i’ve had to return a few out of some batches! that may be commonplace with some manufacturers, but, taiyo yuden never had that problem a while back and i thought it never happened with verbatim! in any case, i highly recommend them because with everything being made in china, india, pakistan, taiwan, etc… and not japan or usa anymore i feel that it is going to be hit and miss with any brand that you buy out there!

I always use these

I like to have a backup of my movies…just in case. Albiet, the quality of the movies suffers somewhat because these disks only hold 4.75 gigs, but I don’t mind. Very seldom have I run across a bad disk over the many years I’ve used them.

Last, Good Version of Verbatim DVD-Rs

These purple-boxed Verbatim DVD-Rs are the older version, before Verbatim was bought out in November 2019 by some weird company that now makes the DVD-Rs more poorer quality. The package mine came in was very dusty, but the DVDs were pristine and all of them wrote contents just fine at 16x speed. Make sure to buy these and not the new Verbatim version, to get the old quality that these DVD-Rs are known for.

Always reliable high quality discs

Verbatim is the brand I always rely on for all my recordable discs. Years ago I tried other brands when on sale like Memorex, HP and Sony and always ended up with many coasters. I also have done my research and on the top of every list of the most reliable recordable discs there is Verbatim. It is stressed that it must be the Verbatim discs manufactured in Japan and that is indeed what you get here. With this recent 50 dvd disc spindle I have already used half of the discs and have not had a single error disc. And this has always been my experience with Verbatim. It’s great that Amazon has them here at such a great price but even if they were more expensive Verbatim is the only brand I will now use. I honestly believe if people are having continuous problems with these discs that it is likely the problem is with the software you are using to burn your discs rather than with Verbatim. This high recommendation I am giving is not only due to my experience with this recent 50 disc spindle but looking at my history with Verbatim over the years. Always reliable and never a problem. Also everything they promise in their detailed item description is true. These discs burn at a very high speed and get done quickly which definitely helps make volume disc burning go by much faster. And the quality of the video on the discs is always excellent. When making a copy of a disc I can hardly tell it is a copy. The transfer looks almost exctly like the original and not a second generation copy.

I went into such detail here for there are so many brands out there and such varying prices and promised guarantees by companies that with my long history with Verbatim and my success with all their recordable discs I hope my experience can help others. Highly recommend.

Verbatim Was Sold – Falcon Premium Are Better

Update Nov 2019: Verbatim was recently sold. In the last two years, I, like others have reported, have run into quality issues as they wound down there business model. They are still better than most of the major brands but not what they used to be.
These days, I use and recommend Falcon Premium dvd-r. Not the Pro, not the Dupliline, not the Basic. Make sure to get the Premium line.
I have had amazing results with the Falcon brand discs. They are a little more money but well worth it. Falcon is probably the last company making high quality optical discs out there. They are as good as the old Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden discs.

Old Review:
These are the best dvd+r’s out there. Top notch quality still. The accuracy, reflectivity, compatibility and longevity of these discs can not be beat. Over the years I have only ever had a few bad discs. These days, they all seem to be made at the Taiwan facility which is the highest quality optical media factory in the world at this point. I have not had a coaster in years now. I have many of these discs that are 11 to 14 years old and they have very little to no degradation. All play fine. All scan either the same as they did when they were made or with a very very slight increase in very correctable errors. In fact, they scan better than most other manufacturers discs when brand new and I expect them to last decades more. Just make sure to store them indoors, away from light and not near a heat or ac vent. Don’t worry about paying the high prices of M-Discs and gold discs (both of which have compatibility issues), these discs last. Make sure that your dvd drive is not wearing out. I have found the biggest problem over the years is in using a burner for too long. I have made the mistake in thinking that I had bad discs when it was really my drive getting old and not burning correctly. DVD drives’ lasers weaken over time and I have found that to be as large an issue in producing quality discs as disc quality. I have always found DVD+R better than -R although there are some that claim that there is no difference. +R does have more error correction and in my experience have less problems. Also, buy these branded ones, not the 8x Datalife Plus ones. Those are made in China at a lesser facility and Verbatim has a history of making much better 16x media than 8x.
The only other discs that compared to these were the Taiyo Yuden discs that were made in Japan. Now that they have closed that facility, Verbatim has no competition.

They work so far – UPDATED REVIEW on Jan. 23, 2011

I ordered the Verbatim 95098 DVD+R 100 pack, after reading a review that said these ones were not made in India. Well, quess what? The are made in India. I’ve only used two so far, so this review may be a bit premature, but both burned fine. For what it’s worth, I have a Samsung SH-S222L burner (pretty sure that’s the model), and I use K3B to burn disks (a Linux app). The first disk I burned was about 2.5GB worth of data, and using the default settings, K3B started burning at the initial speed of 22.5x. I’m not sure how that’s possible, but that’s what it said. The actual esimated burn speed varied between 10x and 16x, and the data on the disk was readable. The second disk I burned was a video DVD (a home video), and I chose 8x for the burn speed. That worked fine, plays in my DVD player without any problems. I’m no expert, but my guess is that different disks work differently in different burners. To be honest, I’ve never had any bad disks, no matter what brand disk or burner I’ve ever used, except when a burner was dying. It always seems to be the burner at fault. I had an HP burner (I forget the model) that burned coasters after the first week, all others worked fine for at least a few years. If I start getting bad disks with this batch, I’ll update this review.

Update: I just noticed today that sometimes video DVDs I burn have non-functioning DVD menu buttons. Pressing the menu button on the remote one or more times fixes it. I burned them at 8x, by the way. Will have to try a slower speed, perhaps, but likely will look for another brand. I’m not sure if it’s just my DVD player or the disks, though. I guess I should suspect the disks. Too bad I couldn’t find out where they were manufactured before ordering them. I’ll have to avoid Verbatim after this. Other than that weird problem, I haven’t had any other problems – yet. Time will tell. I’ll stick with Sony, when on sale locally. I’ve never had problems with those.

Update: The two DVDs with bad menu buttons were caused by an older version of DvdStyler, I had forgotten about that. I had to re-do the menus with the newest version, now they are fine. It wasn’t the disks after all. So, it seems that these disks are working fine for me. I’ll wait until I’ve burned more of them, and report back if there are any problems. Still, with all the complaints, I’ll stick with other brands after this. I’ve had great results with Sony, and some others.

Update April 2, 2011: I’ve used about two thirds of the discs, and not one failure! Either I’m one of the lucky ones, or they improved the quality of these disks.

Update May 7, 2011: I’m getting low on disks now, and still not one failure!

Look for “AZO” on the label.

I have been using these Verbatim DVD+R for many years now, over many boxes, and have never had a problem with the discs. The only problems occurred when the DVD drive went buggy. Be warned, however. Verbatim is marketing DVD’s in similar packaging, at slightly lower price, but they are not the same. The best – any only ones to bother with – are these – which MUST specifically state “AZO” on the label, which is the particular dye that makes these the most reliable and long-lived.

Quality and an Affordable Price

I have thankfully finally gotten through a sleeve of another brand of disk (they seem like a great deal until you HAVE to use them up). Over the years, I had personally used HP (2 versions), Sony and Memorex (2 versions). I am by no means a production warehouse, but have gone through a few. The last batch were particularly troublesome in that I had about a 1 in 5 shot of the disk failing (and the sister sleeve of CD’s can now only be used for data because of an issue in production that rendered them useless for audio as they have a hiss and pulsating sound to them). I finally got through them, then thought back to my days in a computer data center and loading backup tapes. One of the brands that came to mind was Verbatim. I loaded over 300 of these tapes a day and the tapes themselves lasted for years (well beyond what they were supposed to). Then I remembered the fellows I worked with would order blank disks from the same company. I stepped up and went with one I knew I could trust.
